Back pain generally begins with an altered relationship (misalignment) between two adjacent vertebrae which is called a subluxation. This subluxation causes an increased strain, as well as a loss of motion in the gliding joints of the spine. These gliding joints (facets) are found in pairs, along the entire spine, and their function is to allow for movement and flexibility of the spine.
When these facet joints are affected by trauma or repeated stress from mild to excessive strenuous work, home, or sports activities, heredity, weakened or deconditioned muscles, and the inevitable aging process, low back and/or leg pain is commonly experienced.
Degenerative or decaying changes in the disc or an altered function (misalignment) in the facet joints, contribute significantly to the “wear” process, placing severe strain and–tear upon the spine. An osteoarthritic spine or misaligned spine becomes less flexible, and therefore becomes more vulnerable to injury. A simple unexpected or forced movement, physically heavy work, improper posture, frequent bending or lifting all can produce strain and injury to these facet joints.
Chiropractic care, which usually includes spinal adjustments (manipulations) and physiologic therapeutics such as ice, heat, rehabilitative exercises, as well as nutritional advice helps to reduce pain, and muscle spasm. In turn correcting the cause of the problem, rather than masking the symptoms. It is important to follow the specific instructions of Dr. Birk regarding work and leisure activities, exercise programs, weight control, occupational factors, and frequency of visits in order to achieve the optimum relief and correction for your back pain and to help prevent recurrence.
The first step is always a thorough history check, we need to know what you've been through to get you where you want.
Back pain can originate in different areas, so the most important thing we want to do is to locate the root cause of your back pain.
We do this by conducting a hands-on examination. After we identify the movements that are causing your pain, we’ll examine the muscles and ligaments in the affected area.
If necessary, we’ll use Digital X-Ray to take pictures of your back. These images can be used to confirm a diagnosis or rule out causes before finalizing a treatment plan.

For patients with severe back pain, sciatica or disc herniations, studies have shown that spinal decompression therapy has proved to be more effective than other therapies. Spinal decompression therapy uses a medical technology that applies a distraction force to the targeted compressed disc. This gently pulls the spine apart, elongating it and creating a small vacuum between the vertebrae, which pulls the disc back into shape. This vacuum also allows water, oxygen and nutrient-rich fluids to enter into the disc to allow the spine to heal and relieve the pain. The medical term for this vacuum-like effect is known as negative intra-discal pressure.
Low Intensity Laser Therapy
Laser Therapy, is a painless treatment which increases circulation, drawing water, oxygen, and nutrients to the damaged area which is causing your pain. This creates an optimal healing environment that reduces inflammation, swelling, muscles spasms, stiffness and pain. Each treatment of laser can take anywhere from 5 to 10 minutes.
